As a personal stylist, I have the opportunity to work with a lot of women and men. Not only in the wardrobe department, but with skin care and beauty needs, as well. At one time or another, we have all made the mistake of wearing more make-up than necessary. Or, wearing the wrong types/shades of make-up for our skin tone. Ill-suited foundation, dark eyeshadow and strong lip color make for a disasterous combination. The make-up you choose and how you apply it makes all the difference. The right balance is key, just as it is in clothing. Formulas and colors are an individual thing. As I get older, I wear less makeup. It’s liberating to not be dependent upon it. Now that’s not to say that I don’t absolutely love taking the time to make my face up for the appropriate occasion. In fact, it's what inspires me when getting dressed in the mornings.
So how can you avoid the heavy hand for an every day make-up routine? Skip foundation if you can, or instead, wear a tinted moisturizer or light powder. Stay neutral during the week with eye color and avoid shimmery shadows, as they accentuate lines. Ensure your lip color is complimentary to your skin color and face, in addition to not competing with your eye make-up. Dark lipsticks make your lips look smaller, so choose pinks, beiges or corals with a little shimmer. Or, use a gloss with flecks of sparkle to make your lips look fuller.
For special occasions, play with color or a smoky eye (smoky doesn't mean just black or charcoal). The whole point is to let your inner beauty radiate out in order to express your style.
