It's that time of year, right when soccer ends (May), swim team begins. The madness of everyday practices and multiple swim meets throughout the week. And the hot summer weather! So it was fitting when I was asked last night what one should wear to a swim meet. Ironically enough, I said, "probably not what I am wearing."

jeans-swim-meetThe reason for my response was because I was wearing this outfit here ... jeans and a tank top. Granted, it was an evening meet so I was completely comfortable in my jeans, it was not too hot. And I figured I would get less eaten up by mosquitoes. However, this outfit isn't the best under most circumstances. Jeans can be heavy, the ends will most definitely get wet and there is less freedom to move about. That doesn't stop me, though, as I do not wear shorts during the summer (well, I have one pair).

Sunscreen, sunglasses and rubber flip-flops are a must! And pedicured toes sure look nice, too.

fedora-swimmeetNow this outfit seems a bit more appropriate and fun! I love the fedora, the bright colored top and jeans shorts combo. A cool, casual look. This take on the flip-flops adds to the outfit, as do the big sunglasses.

Pivotal to pack: sunscreen, towel and, the ever important, cooler! The cooler will save you if your kids are anything like mine (always hungry)! I load mine with sports drinks, water, caffeine-free diet Dr. Pepper (my only soda splurge), sandwiches, fruit, nuts and maybe a little treat. Inevitably, the kids will still ask to buy something from the concession stand. And, of course, I end up supporting the local pool.

black-shorts-swim-meetI will wear this outfit, too, as my only pair of shorts happen to be black knee length shorts that are super comfortable and go with everything. I like this whimsical t-shirt paired with the jelly flip-flops. You have to be practical — you are going to wet, and even more so if you are a lane timer. When in doubt, reach for cotton and linen. These are your most breathable fabrics in hot temperatures.

Remember to bring your cheering voice for the 20 seconds (give or take a few, depending on your swimmer) your child competes in his/her heat. Congratulate them in between and get ready for the next heat. You'll be there for at least five hours.

Thanks to Amy (who was very appropriately dressed, by the way) for supplying this question. Should you have any questions yourself, please feel free to send them in to your personal stylist.
